چکیده

T HE DISCOVERY of the lipotropic action of choline, inositol and other substances1-led several workers to postulate their utility in the prophylaxis and therapy of both experimental and clinical atherosclerosis. It was reasoned that these factors might influence the deposition of lipids in the vascular wall, as well as in the liver. It was also suggested that they might affect the concentration and stability of plasma lipids, presumably key factors in atherogenesis.9"l0 Experimental attempts to test such hypotheses have lead to contradictory results.9-24 Despite such inconsistent findings and the paucity of clinical data,21 25 27 costly preparations of choline and/or inositol are being widely recommended as useful medications for the prophylaxis and therapy of human arteriosclerosis. From both scientific and socioeconomic considerations, therefore, it is essential that further experimentation be done on lipotropic factors in arteriosclerosis. This and the subsequent paper present biochemical and pathologic data on the effects of choline and inositol on cholesterol-induced, stilbestrol-induced and spontaneous atherosclerosis of young cockerels.

Effects of Persian leek (Allium ampeloprasum) on hepatic lipids and the expression of proinflammatory gene in hamsters fed a high-fat/ high-cholesterol diet

Objective: Persian leek is one of the most widely used herbal foods among Iranians. In this study, effects of oral administration of Persian leek on plasma and liver lipids were examined in hamster. Materials and Methods: Male Syrian hamsters were randomly divided into three groups: control (standard diet), high fat control (high-fat/high-cholesterol diet), Persian leek (high-fat/high-cholester...

Influence of Dietary Protein on Plasma Lipids

Most studies concerning the influence of dietary protein on serum or plasma lipids have been conducted with experimental animals. A hypocholesterolemic effect has been demonstrated for high dietary protein levels in growing swine, rats, and chicks (1-6). In the rat a hypercholesterolemic diet, containing cholesterol, or cholic acid, or both, is required to demonstrate a substantial depressant e...

Lipotropic factors and the fatty liver produced by feeding cholesterol.

The excessive deposition of liver lipids which is produced in rats by feeding diets containing cholesterol is inhibited by choline and betaine (Best & Ridout, 1933; Best, Channon & Ridout, 1934). Choline was shown to affect both glycerides and cholesteryl esters but deposition of the former was inhibited more than that of the latter. .Many preventive and curative experiments were subsequently r...
